A striking makeover for Mel and Tom’s kitchen

Mel and Tom weren’t sure how to finish off their kitchen. It was somewhere they loved to spend time, but was lacking a finishing touch…

Adding oomph to our kitchen

“We love our kitchen,” explains Mel, “but wanted to add some oomph to the space. After deciding a blind would be the perfect solution, we set about our search.

“We found Web-Blinds, and explored the site for some much needed inspiration. The blog was a great resource, and we came across a piece on bringing ‘summer stripes’ to your home.

“Finally, we were inspired. It was great that we could browse by pattern – we clicked ‘stripes’ and were spoilt for choice. We soon found the one for us – a blue Roman blind called ‘Blue Deckchair’.”

Makeovers don’t have to be daunting

“When our blind came, I couldn’t wait to get it up,” Tom says. “I watched the simple online video and started installing it – under Mel’s watchful eye, of course!

“I think some people are daunted by the word makeover, because it makes them think of painting, tiling, and hours spent scraping wallpaper off.

“But we feel like we’ve had a full kitchen makeover, and all we’ve done is introduce a pattern at the window!

They go together like spots and stripes

Once Mel and Tom had their blind up, it was time to accessorise. “Our spotty butter dish is like a match made in heaven for our stripy blind,” Mel explains. “Although we want our kitchen to be a practical place, we do like the little touches!

“Our vintage scales are another favourite purchase. They tick the all-important practical box as well as being a talking point. They pick up the cream in the blind nicely.

“I’m super impressed with the blind – it’s well made, and even though we were really pleased with the price, we didn’t have to compromise on quality.

“I’m also pleased with how small the Roman blind folds up. I thought we’d lose some light, but we can still pull it right up to the top and admire the view of our garden. We’re praying for some good weather to actually get out there and enjoy it!”

Fact File – Meet Mel and Tom

Our home: We moved into our four-bedroom Victorian home just before Christmas in 2013. It’s our first home together, and it took us a long time to find the ideal place. After months of renovating and decorating, it’s finally ‘us’, and now we love it!

Our room then: We love our kitchen, but we felt it needed something to spruce it up. First and foremost, it had to be a practical space so we didn’t want anything too neutral that might suffer splashes.

And now: A striped blind has kept our décor on the straight and narrow. We feel like we’ve had a complete makeover – one small change has really made all the difference.

Proudest project: We knocked through the wall between our dining and living room. No one tells you just how daunting all that rubble is going to be, but now they’ve gone from two claustrophobic spaces to the hub of the home.
